Chinese success for ESBI staff

Staff chosen from top European candidates for Spring School on Carbon Capture and Storage, China.

In January 2009, ESBI invited staff to submit applications for a chance to participate in the international school on Carbon Capture and Storage to be held in China this April. Last month ESBI was proud to announce that Donnchadh Irish and Afra Ronayne, successfully competed with utility companies all over Europe to secure two out of the 15 European places available.

Based on the ongoing significant contribution of fossil fuels to meeting energy requirements, and the consequent effect of increasing Carbon Dioxide levels in the atmosphere, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), is deemed vital in the battle against global warming.

The overall objective of the COACH Spring School on CCS is to communicate knowledge and increase understanding of advanced emerging power cycles and systems that include Carbon Capture and geological storage, designed to meet growing demand for near zero emission power generation by 2020.

The COACH Spring School on CCS runs from 20-26 April and is hosted by Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China.

After a screening and internal interview process two staff, Afra Ronayne from ESBI's Carbon Solutions team and Donnchadh Irish from ESBI's Power Plant division, were selected to represent ESBI in competing for a place at the school. With a combined experience of over 12 years spanning combustion engineering; fuels and fuel diversity; carbon capture technologies; process integration; thermodynamic modelling; engineering design; technoeconomic evaluation; and carbon credit generation projects; Afra and Donnchadh are expected to bring a wealth of energy engineering experience to the Spring School.

Gerry White, Manager of Market and Technology Developments, ESBI, who promoted the Spring School initiative told EM, "We are very proud of Afra and Donnchadh. There were only 15 places available in the Spring School for European candidates, so it is a great honour for our colleagues to be selected as part of the European team, and indeed an honour for ESBI itself. I personally would like to congratulate both candidates and their managers on their success. I know that they will represent ESBI with distinction". EM
