Farewell to Tarbert

ESB has marked the end of an era in Tarbert by hosting a function at the Fels Point Hotel in Tralee. The event celebrated ESB Tarbert's close involvement with the community for over 40 years and was attended by former and current employees at the power station as well as representatives of the local community. The station was recently sold to Spanish utility, Endesa.

Chairperson of the Tarbert Development Association, Joan Murphy, complimented ESB as employers and thanked them for their support in the community over the years. Ms Murphy accepted a cheque from ESB on behalf of the community and also funds to assist in the rebuilding of the Tarbert Community Hall. She stated that, "these gestures were hugely generous and the TDA will use the money for the next project we deem of merit".

Station Manager Gerry Crean, who remains on under Endesa said, "ESB had a presence here for 45 years, since first establishing an operation in 1964. After the building of the two large units in 1977, Tarbert Island was the biggest power plant in Ireland and employed over 290 people at its height in the 1980s". "This was a very significant operation and the company, while sad at leaving Tarbert, was delighted to mark the relationship in this way," he said.
