Sustainability Update

In the first article, we looked at initiatives in our stations, where there is obvious and significant scope to drive down carbon emissions. However, Head Office staff are also showing their commitment to the corporate sustainability strategy.

Sustainability initiatives in ET&R

During sustainability week, staff in ESB Power Generation Energy Trading and Regulation (ET&R) reported to Sustainability Director John Campion on the many initiatives being undertaken in ET&R.

While our station staff are committed to improving the Carbon footprint of our plant, ET&R took this a little literally, by staging a fun competition to grow their own plants.

John Lawlor was MC for the occasion and John Campion kindly judged the plant competition.

In many ways ET&R's Carbon league is mirroring in a light hearted way, what we will be seeing on a serious, global scale in future, where nations will be competing in a carbon league based on national emission levels, with success or failure having a significant impact on our economy through emissions penalties.

Aghada: commitment to the local community and environment

Aghada is an area in ESB Power Generation where there is much development at present, as the new 400 MW CCGT is being constructed there. This new generator will reduce ESB's overall CO2 emissions greatly as it will be a gas fired combined cycle with very high efficiency. Aghada are continuing to show commitment to the local community through a number of initiatives driven by station sustainability champions Helen O'Connell and Elizabeth Stack, including the provision of recycling facilities at the gate for local residents.
