Seamus Hughes says goodbye
A stalwart of ESB Telecoms retired recently when Seamus Hughes called it a day after 42 years service.
Commencing his career on the first of January 1968, Seamus is probably the only person to start work in ESB on New Year's Day! It was a unique event marking the beginning of the career of a unique individual.
Seamus worked in various departments throughout ESB, but it was during his time in ESB Telecoms that Seamus most left his mark. ESB Telecoms staff are known for meeting obstacles with a 'brush yourself down and start yourself up' attitude and tackle new challenges head on. The portfolio of towers that ESB own is a valuable resource and the team, of which Seamus was an integral part, recognised this and he began to secure licences for tower use from mobile phone operators.
Seamus was responsible for the development of several innovative communications tower designs that are widely used by ESBT. It is a mark of the esteem in which Seamus is held that Daniel Stoppa of Europoles travelled form Germany to present Seamus with a miniature bronze model of one of the towers.
Tom Bambury, General Manager of ESB Telecoms, said in his speech to the large attendance at Seamus's retirement event in Head Office, "It is fair to say that without Seamus Hughes there would be no ESB Telecoms Ltd. He has been a key contributor to the vibrant, successful and profitable company he leaves behind."
In reply, Seamus said that he was not retiring but concentrating on other interests. No doubt the success he brought to ESB Telecoms will follow Seamus in whatever he does.
We wish Seamus a long, healthy and happy retirement together with his wife Maura and their children Nicky, Lindsey and Laura.
