Community Access to Clean Water - Mutu, Papua New Guinea Mutu is a remote and mountainous community in a remote and mountainous land - Simbu province, Papua New Guinea. A participative needs analysis led by VSO volunteer, Patrick Kioko, enabled the community to identify a clean and reliable water supply as their development priority. An excellent source was identified 10 km away. The project included the construction of a small dam, and the piping of the water to the village. The entire project was costed at €14,200 - not including the considerable labour input from the community itself. The cost was met by 50/50 cofunding from ElectricAid and our Civil Service counterparts, the Combined Services Third World Fund. The project was completed in early 2006 within budget and ahead of time, and a community of 9,000 people now has a clean and reliable water supply for the first time ever. The benefits derived from the project include the time and effort saved in trekking for water, the increased health and hygiene levels in the community and the greater sense of co-operative cohesion that came with the successful completion of the project. The availability of steady water for horticulture and dryland fish pond farming will enable further growth and development. This again is a magnificent and life-changing result - for a modest investment of €7,100. |
![]() The end result of the project: a woman drawing water from the constructed village
water canteen whereby all the villagers come to draw water from. This is to
avoid unnecessary spoilage of water and to regulate hygiene. The money to construct
this canteen was contributed by the community members, but the cement
used was from the project money meant for materials used in dam construction.
