Chief Executive to deliver McLaughlin lecture at Engineers Ireland conference
Padraig McManus, Chief Executive of ESB, will deliver the 2006 McLaughlin Lecture entitled In Pursuit of Excellence - Responsible Engineering in an Era of Accountability. The lecture will take place on May 16th 2006 at 6.30pm in the lecture theatre, Engineers Ireland headquarters, 22 Clyde Road, Dublin 4. Refreshments will be available from 6pm and the event will be followed by a wine reception where you can meet other engineers to discuss the challenges facing the profession in the area of corporate social responsibility.
The McLaughlin lecture is organised annually to celebrate and honour one of Ireland's finest engineers, Dr. Thomas A. McLaughlin. An electrical engineer, he completed his early training with Siemens Schuckert in Berlin. He was the founding engineer of ESB, Ireland's National Electricity company and the driving force behind the Shannon Scheme. He was immortalised in the painting, The Key Men (pictured above), by the renowned Irish artist, Sean Keating, born in Limerick in 1889.
Keating's proclamation that engineering was his favourite profession after his own was made while he recorded the construction of Ireland's first major power station at Ardnacrusha on the River Shannon between 1926 and 1930. The Key Men depicts the construction of the dam at Ardnacrusha, which was the foundation stone for rural electrification in Ireland and this has made The Key Men painting synonymous with the McLaughlin Lecture. The original painting, owned by Engineers Ireland, is currently on loan to the National Gallery, where it hangs in the contemporary Irish artists collection
