Milestone in Cycle to Work Scheme
We are
delighted to
announce that
ESB recently
issued its
100th cheque under the 'Cycle
To Work Scheme'. The scheme is
proving extremely
popular with staff
right across the
company and more
than 140 staff bikes
have been purchased. As the
weather improves, more and more
people are taking up cycling or
replacing their old bikes.
Under the scheme, an
employer may provide an
employee with a bicycle and/or
cycle safety equipment without
the employee being liable for
benefit-in-kind taxation. The
bicycle must be used by the
employee for travelling to and
from work or between workplaces.
The scheme means an effective
saving of at least 41% on the cost
of a new bicycle for a top rate
taxpayer.
Purpose of the Scheme
The purposes of the scheme are:
- To encourage more employees
to cycle to and from work.
- To contribute to lowering carbon emissions.
- To help reduce traffic
congestion.
- To help improve health and
fitness levels.
What type of bicycles and
equipment does the scheme
cover?
The scheme covers bicycles,
pedelecs (electric bikes) and
cycling equipment as follows:
- Cycle helmets that conform to
European standard EN 1078.
- Bells and bulb horns.
- Lights, including dynamo
packs.
- Mirrors and mudguards.
- Cycle clips and dress guards.
- Panniers, luggage carriers and
straps to allow luggage to be
safely carried.
- Locks and chains to ensure
cycle can be safely secured.
- Pumps, puncture repair kits,
cycle tool kits and tyre sealant
to allow for minor repairs.
- Reflective clothing along with
white front reflectors and
spoke reflectors.
