ESBI'S Jim McCarthy retires

Jim Mccarthy, Manager of ESB International's Building Consultancy Group (BCG), recently retired after 27 years of service. To celebrate Jim's long service in ESB and ESBI, a large group of colleagues and friends gathered at the retirement presentation in Foleys, Merrion Row. They were joined by Jim's wife Regina, his daughters Maria and Anita and his son Brian.

During his career, Jim worked on building and architectural projects across the country. Many of the ESB's substations, offices and depots were created by his teams. He was also involved with many external clients, including government departments, county councils and AIB Bank. While overseas his assignments included Poland and Saudi Arabia.

Known for his project delivery skills, Jim was key in developing ESB's quantity surveying capability during the late 80s and that capabillity has grown to become a very successful activity for the ESB Group.

As manager of BCG, Jim’s contribution to ESB and ESBI has been considerable and his expertise in the architectural and QS business is recognised both within the company and throughout the industry. Jim possesses the very valuable gift of bringing a calming influence to a crisis situation – not that many crises ever developed under his stewardship!

His willingness to advise and pass on expertise – particularly in the development of younger colleagues – is widely acknowledged and appreciated. He will be particularly missed by his colleagues in ESBI and we wish both Jim and Regina many happy and healthy years in the future.
