Galway Mountain Rescue

PJ Fallon, an ESB Network Technician with HV Stations Galway, is a team member of Galway Mountain Rescue and has been involved in many rescue operations since he joined the GMR emergency service four years ago.

The rescue team covers an area stretching from the Connemara mountains to the Burren in Co. Clare and its 24 volunteer members. drawn from experienced hill-walkers and mountaineers.

It can take as many as 20 people, consisting of a Team Leader, Medic, Radio Operator, Navigator and stretcher carriers on very steep ground. This number can be required to double on occasion with another party on ropes. A base support team is also required to communicate with the hill rescue party and others such as relatives of injured parties, the Coastguard, Aer Corps helicopters, Gardai, ambulance crews and the press. All team equipment such as ropes, harnesses, radios, GPS equipment, stretchers, splints, collars and medical equipment are partly funded by Government grants with the remaining funds raised through generous donations from rescued casualties and from flag day collections.

PJ hopes to be able to give many more years of service to this organisation. Any person wishing to make a donation can contact PJ direct at 087 6449502.
