OHSAS 18001 for Lough Ree Power

ESB POWER GENERATION

On October 10th Lough Ree Power became ESB Power Generation's first station to achieve OHSAS 18001 certification for its safety management system.

The certification to OHSAS 18001 ensures that the station can demonstrate that it takes effective measures and implements the necessary controls to ensure that they have identified and are managing the safety and risks associated with the operation and maintenance of power plant.

The certification audit comprised a thorough examination of the station's safety management systems ranging from documentation, inspection routines, housekeeping, statutory inspections, tagging of equipment through to station permits by two auditors from SGS Ireland for two days.

The programme for the attainment of certification which began on June 11th was project managed centrally by Kevin Grace from Safety Services assisted by Jim Reynolds. The on site implementation was managed by John Noonan assisted by the station's Health, Safety & Environmental Group comprising Trevor Flynn, Liam Doyle, Pat Tighe, Seamus Finn, MB Rowland and Tom Walsh along with assistance from John Sorohan. Brian Flynn who moved to West Offaly Power earlier in the year was a key player prior to his departure.

The implementation for the station required putting the requisite station documentation in place to a designated format, ensuring that Station records were up to date, documented and readily accessible, getting internal auditors trained and ensuring the internal audit of the 14 OHSAS 18001 sections were carried out and documented.

"The certification is a tribute to the continued effort that all in Lough Ree Power put into health and safety," said Manager, Jerry McKenna.

Together with the certification, the station on Monday, October 22nd celebrated the milestone of 700 days without a Lost Time Incident. Areas are covered by OHSAS 18001:

  • Planning for hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control
  • OHSAS management programme
  • Structure and responsibility
  • Training, awareness and competence
  • Consultation and communication
  • Operational control
  • Emergency preparedness and response
  • Performance measuring, monitoring and improvement
