Nimule School Project, Sudan

The Nimule School Project in southern Sudan offers hope to generations of children traumatised by war and hungry for education. The project runs 9 schools in Nimule, offering early childhood education to over 1,000 children. This early education frees mothers and siblings for their own education, brings structure and order to lives broken by conflict, offers nutrition through a school porridge programme, and works against ethnic conflict by allowing children to meet and mix with different tribes from a young age. Crucially, the programme gives hope and occupation to young boys, discouraging them from becoming child soldiers.

ElectricAid has helped this programme on a number of occasions. The latest project grant was for €6,000 to construct a teacher-training block in 2004.

This facility has now been completed; early education teachers are now being trained for an ever-widening area of southern Sudan. This project is co-ordinated by the Jesuit Refugee Service.
