ESB Safe Driving Bureau

Drink Driving does not happen by chance. Sadly, it happens by choice.

Fact! 4 out of every 10 road deaths on our roads involve alcohol.

Fact! 459 drivers were arrested for drink driving between 12 midnight Thursday 26th October 2006 and 12 midnight Monday October 30th 2006.

Fact! A recent survey conducted by the Road Safety Authority highlighted 87% of the population believe that drinking and driving is extremely shameful behaviour. So shameful that it is ranked as the third most shameful behaviour after sexual abuse (96%) and drug dealing (93%).

Fact! Up to 17% of drink driving arrests occur the 'morning after.' Fact! Since the introduction of random breath testing, road deaths have reduced month on month. Statistics as at 14th November 2006

The Morning After - You May Not Be Fit To Drive
Every week there are over 300 arrests for drink driving in Ireland. Nowadays, most of us are conscientious enough to do the right thing by planning our transportation home from a night out, but what about the following morning?

One way to tell if you're fit to drive the morning after is to estimate when you're alcohol-free. It takes approximately 1 hour for you to metabolise a unit of alcohol. Have a look at the table below.
