Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) and Hitachi visit ESB Networks

It's always interesting to learn from other utilities, and when ESB Networks heard of the miniature unit substation used by Tepco, it was suggested that it might also be possible to take advantage of such technology in ESB, particularly given the financial/engineering challenges posed by PR2.

Tepco are converting from 6.6kV to 22kV in parts of Tokyo, and as part of this conversion needed to replace their existing sidewalk-mounted substations. These only measured 1m x 1.5m x 0.5m, but a planning requirement meant that any replacement substation could not be larger.

Working in conjunction with Hitachi, Tepco developed a 300kVA Unit Sub with the same dimensions which used vacuum switchgear! The suitability of a modified form of this substation is currently being considered by staff in Asset Management, ESB Networks, and a joint Networks/ESBI Technical group has been invited to Tokyo early in the new year to discuss further areas of mutual interest, including HV substation supplies to high-rise buildings.
