Electricaid Project of the Month - The Kano Bus

St. Louis school, Kano, was the first secondary school for girls in northern Nigeria. In a predominantly Muslim and educationally disadvantaged state, the school provides balanced and relevant education for both Muslim and Christian girls. A special feature of the school is that it caters for poor girls from the rural areas of Kano state, who would not otherwise receive a secondary education. Fees are modest, and reduced or waived for girls from poorer rural backgrounds.

To attain the school's objectives, transport is critical - there is no public transport, so a school bus is essential. St Louis' bus was clapped out. In May 2005, ElectricAid contributed €10,000 for a replacement. A similar sum was raised from parents and benefactors, and in August 2006, the new 30-seater Toyota bus hit the highways and byways of Kano. The bus meets the needs of the school for academic and extra-curricular transport, addresses safety issues for the students and enables them to foster inter-school, inter-tribe, and inter-faith activities

Sister Catherine Ologunagba writes: "The students, staff and parents are very pleased with this development as it will enable us to take care of our transportation needs. The parents have asked me to convey their heartfelt gratitude to ElectricAid for this assistance."
