ESBIE and McDonald's Restaurants sign €3.7 million electricity deal

ESB Independent Energy (ESBIE) a subsidiary supply company of ESB has secured a new contract to power McDonald's 92 restaurants in Ireland. The €3.7m deal will see ESBIE supplying electricity to 71 McDonald's stores in the Republic and 21 in Northern Ireland.

ESBIE will source power for this contract from its gas fired Dublin Bay Power station on the Poolbeg Peninsula and its Coolkeeragh power station near Derry.

The contract also involves ESBIE providing energy-saving advice to McDonald's outlets across the country. A successful energy audit has already been carried out in one Dublin restaurant, providing an energy template for savings in the rest of the branches.

The deal includes a single billing provision that reflects the recently created All Island electricity market and that facilitates dual currency and dual electricity pricing operations.

McDonald's has had a presence in Ireland for the past 30 years and provides employment for more than 4,000 people operating a mix of franchised and direct-owned restaurants.
