Editors letter

Hello and Welcome to the first edition of EM for 2010.

News

I am sure many of you have been affected by the dreadful weather conditions that prevailed over the Christmas and New Year period. It would seem that no area of the country was left untouched and many places will be reviewing the havoc caused for some time to come. Many of you will also have seen news clips of our staff working in very tough conditions to restore supply to homes and premises where damage was caused by snow and high winds. You will also see from our Letters edition that this was appreciated by the public in general who had first hand experience of the work.

It has been a very tough time for the elderly, particularly those living alone and, of course, the homeless. Our Last Word interview in this issue is with Brother Kevin Crowley from the Capuchin Friary in Dublin, one of a number of charities that ESB contributed to, in lieu of Christmas cards, just before Christmas, will endorse this topic. ESB and our staff, whether individually or through ElectricAid, have many involvements with such charities. ESB Customer Supply also has a very strong liaison with bodies such as Fuel Poverty and others and so from a community point of view, we are only too aware of the issues involved.

Our plight in Ireland, however, diminishes considerably in the light of events in Haiti. Once again ElectricAid, ESB management and staff have stepped forward and a major campaign is now underway to respond to the Haiti appeal. Let us hope that the much needed aid will find its way urgently to this tragic area.
