Make a difference:
ElectricAid's Special Appeal for Haiti
News: By Tina Pittock, Chair, ElectricAid
We have all been deeply affected by the unfolding humanitarian tragedy in Haiti. The earthquake of 12th January has taken 100's of thousands of lives, and has devastated one of the world's poorest and least-favoured societies. Over the years, Haiti has suffered poverty, government by terror, hurricanes, political instability - and now has been literally flattened by earthquake. Up to three-million people are homeless, an estimated 100,000 lives have been destroyed, and an inadequate infrastructure and a fragile economy are wiped out.
These are our brothers and sisters. They have nothing and they are reaching out to all of us. ElectricAid is mobilising to help. We have already made an initial donation to Partners in Health, who are on the ground in Haiti, for emergency medical relief.
We are now launching, in partnership with ESB, ElectricAid's Special Appeal for Haiti. ESB has generously committed to fully match any donation made by staff and pensioners. In these tough economic times, we are deeply grateful to ESB Chief Executive, Padraig McManus, for this magnificent support. This will ensure that your donations go further, making a bigger difference on the ground. These funds will be dedicated to providing shelter, clean water, medical care - and then to aid the longer-term rehabilitation of Haiti. When Haiti has gone off the TV and no longer makes the headlines, your donations will be helping to rehabilitate and rebuild shattered lives and communities. We will fund only reputable agencies and projects, known to and approved by ElectricAid. Every penny donated will go directly, without deduction.
Please help now. The on-line donation facility on ESBnet, first used in 2005 for our last Special Appeal (for the Tsunami), has been reinstated. This allows you to make on-line donations by way of a once-off salary deduction. If you don't have ESBnet access, please make your donation by completing and returning the once-off deduction form printed below, to ElectricAid, D3C, ESB Head Office.
Together, we can make a real difference. We can save lives, and we can help thousands of people in despair to start to put the pieces together again. We know that times are tougher for all of us, but we are confident that, once again, ESB and its staff will rise to the challenge, and prove to be as caring, supportive and generous, as ever before.
