Its purpose is to promote equality and diversity through a partnership approach and its term of office runs for two years at which point new nominations are sought. The JEC has an independent Chairperson – Professor Eileen Drew from Trinity College.

The Council meets six times a year and twice a year the meeting is held in an ESB location outside of Dublin. The November meeting of the Council was held in Gracedieu, Waterford. The agenda covered a wide range of topics such as: Communications, up-dates on Equality & Diversity, Disability and Action Plans for 2010. During the course of the morning, the local staff in Gracedieu were invited in to the meeting and Joyce Farrell, Equality & Diversity Manager, gave a presentation on the workings of the JEC and the types of issues it deals with. This was followed by a question and answer session.
