George Walsh Retires

George joined ESB in 1967 and took up duty in ESB's Central Laboratory in Pigeon House, Dublin. He worked as Station Chemist in Rhode for a short while (67-68) and then returned to work on development of the new Water Treatment Plant.

He then went on to work with the late Dorothy Hurley in 1971, in the Analytical Chemistry section in Central Lab. From then until 1996 he organised chemical analysis for all aspects of ESB operation. This work included quality assurance of products purchased by ESB (e.g., creosote, galvanisation, boiler deposits and transformer oils to name a few). George also compiled a number of volumes on Standard Methods of chemical analysis for ESB power station laboratories.

In 1996 he moved to Applied Chemistry Services where he was involved in a number of projects and produced a number of chemical safety and plant operation guidelines and standards.

George was wellknown throughout the organisation for his work with ESB's Control of Hazardous Substances (COHS) system on the intranet. He also produced ESB's Guideline on Legionnaires Disease and the ESB Laboratory Safety Guideline. George's wife Anne and daughter Johanna attended a presentation ceremony in Pigeon House to mark his retirement.
