ESB Hillwalkers trek in Slovenia

There is a point in the Julian Alps where the three countries of Slovenia, Italy and Austria come together. Marked by a triangle with the three countries flags, it stands above the forested hills. At such a place, you expect stunning views across the three nations, the Alps, perhaps even to the sea.

When ESB Hillwalkers reached this point on the second last day in August 2007, visibility was down to 10m max. Mist first, then heavy rain and then, as they search for a sheltered spot to rest, the lightning storm began. They got down to the village in record time.

It was however, the only day that the weather spoiled an otherwise beautiful week in the Alpine village of Kranjska Gora in Slovenia. The sun shone for the ascent of Ciprnik, with its panoramic views of three valleys and the surrounding peaks. The sun shone for the climb to the Vrsic Pass, beyond Prednje Okno or Front Window, the giant eye in the peak of Prisank and beyond Ajdovska Deklica, the image of the Pagan Girl, created by rock breakage and decomposition. The final day's trek took them up the river gorge to the fabulous Spodnji Martuljkov Slap waterfall, the star attraction of a wonderful week in the mountains.

Challenging hills by day, good food and drink by night, cheering companionship from dawn 'til late. What more could you ask for...another successful trip for ESB Hillwalkers!

ESB Hillwalkers Club is open for membership. The club meets once a month for a walk, generally in the Wicklow area. It is affiliated to the Mountaineering Council of Ireland and all club members are also members of that body.

The secretary Michael Murray can be contacted at Tel. 01 4941419.
