ESBI wins €15.4million contract in Tanzania Esb international has signed a $19.74 million (about €15.45million) contract with Millennium Challenge Account – Tanzania (MCA-T), an agency funded by the government of the United States of America, through the Millennium Challenge Corporation. The contract will help Tanzania strengthen and expand its electricity system. ESBI Engineering and Facility Management (ESBIe-fm) was awarded the consultancy services contract involving the construction of a hydro power station and associated distribution system in western Tanzania, as well as the installation of an undersea interconnector from the mainland to Zanzibar Island. Under the contract ESBI will also engage in the extension of the rural distribution networks in six regions of Tanzania. ESBI will be responsible for the specification and tendering of the construction contracts and for the supervision of contractors constructing the key infrastructure projects. As part of the contract, ESBI will also implement a capacity building programme for staff of both the Tanzanian and Zanzibari power utilities. ESBI previously carried out consultancy projects in Tanzania during the mid 1990s, when it was engaged by the Tanzanian national power utility, TANESCO. ESBIe-fm's Manager of International Consultancy, Liam Walsh commented, "This significant project in Tanzania is a very prestigious assignment, won in an international competitive process. The contract will build on ESBI's presence in Africa, where the company is currently working on a number of projects for ESKOM, the South African utility." The ESBI team, headed up by John Ashley, as Project Director, went to Tanzania in November to commence the six-month Phase 1 of the contract. In addition to John, the initial team included, Johan Swan as Deputy Project Director and Francois Pienaar as Construction Supervision/Quality Assurance Engineer. A number of other short-term engineering and environmental specialists will also be involved in this phase of the project, which will see the preparation of all of the technical specifications for input to engineer, procure and construct (EPC) tender documents for the project construction contracts. Phase 2 will see ESBI supervising the EPC contractors who will carry out the construction of the infrastructure project developments and, during this phase, other ESBI staff will go to the site to complement the initial team. About Tanzania Tanzania is home to all of Africa's 'Big Five' species of wildlife – elephants, rhinos, giraffes, lions, leopards and water buffalos – and it is a favourite location for safari tourism in world renowned national parks such as the Ngorogoro Crater, the Serengeti and Arusha. | ||||
