The National Cervical Screening Programme

Cervical screening is a proven and worthwhile preventative health measure. Smear tests can detect early changes in the neck of the womb; the earlier a change is detected the easier it is to treat. A successful national programme in Ireland has the potential to cut current mortality rates from cervical cancer by up to 80%.

From September 1st, 2008, a National Programme known as 'Cervical Check' was implemented by the National Cancer Screening Service and funded by the Department of Health and Children. The programme will provide free smear tests on an ongoing basis through primary care settings to women aged 25 to 60 who are eligible for screening.

A woman can self – register, which means she can contact 'Cervical Check' to register with the Programme and choose her preferred smeartaker in her locality. This can be done through one of the following methods:

  1. Ring the Freephone Information Line; 1800454555
  2. Register online at the website; www.cervicalcheck.ie
  3. Email details directly to the Cervical Check Office: info@cervicalcheck.ie
  4. With the establishment of this excellent cervical screening programme, ESB will no longer be providing either on-site cervical screening clinics or re-embursing staff who attend their GP's for a cervical smear after December 31st, 2008.

All female staff should arrange and attend their cervical screening through the National Cervical Screening Programme.
