OHSAS Award for Commercial Group
Commercial Group met the requirements of the New OHSAS 1800: 2007 standard required for the Occupational Health and Safety Management System in support of the Management of major construction projects, major plant overhauls and major demolition and remediation projects. Commercial Group obtained the certification in September of 2008.
The Project team of Project Manager Richard Tobin and project team members Brian Armstrong, Adrian Bannister, Anthony Kelly and Liam Kitson was set up in December 2007 and began work immediately. This project team reported to Steering Group consisting of Noel Greally (Chair), Brian Dolan, and Dave Dwyer. Donal Crean, Commercial Group Manager, Power Generation sponsored the Project as part of a business unit wide strategy for implementation of a standard safety management system.
Delivery of OHSAS – 2007 accreditation in Commercial Group required the unique task of managing OHSAS within the range of diverse activities and projects across Commercial Group and the many different construction project roles that have to be undertaken. Over the next number of months, Commercial Group intends to run a number of articles in EM covering the different aspects of the work being done. The roles vary from being in the Client Role to the Supervisory PSDP/ PSCS Management Roles per the 2006 Construction Act. The core differences are that the Client Roles have to demonstrate that safety is being managed on sites while the Supervisory Roles have to fully manage safety on site.OHSAS has brought an increased awareness of safety throughout Commercial Group and its range of projects. It has facilitated a positive drive for safety on sites, ensured audits / inspections are completed on schedule and have improved the flow of information and recording throughout the group.
OHSAS has enabled the management of safety alerts, safety objectives, works identified at different forums all to be managed and tracked in a very positive manner.Commercial Group has derived considerable benefits from OHSAS and consider the project a major success.
