Powertalk with ESB Toastmasters

Power talk was formed in 2000 by Carmel Ni Mhordha of Power Generation and is one of over 10,500 Toastmasters clubs worldwide affiliated to Toastmasters International. It provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster selfconfidence and personal growth. Surveys show that presentation skills are crucial to success in the work place. The person with strong communication skills has a clear advantage over tongue-tied colleagues - especially in a competitive job market

PowerTalk is a "learn-by-doing" toastmasters club in which members develop their skills in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. Members meet fortnightly to learn and practice public speaking techniques. Membership is only €60 annually and can be paid in two half yearly instalments.

A new member progresses through a series of 10 speaking assignments, designed to instill a basic foundation in public speaking. On completion a member achieves the level of Competent Communicator and can then go on to become Advanced Communicator and Advanced Leader and eventually Distinguished Toastmaster by completing the advanced programme.

There is no instructor in a Toastmasters club. Instead, members evaluate one another's oral presentations in a positive and encouraging manner with the view of helping the speaker to improve their speaking skills. Toastmasters also give impromptu talks on assigned topics. They also develop listening skills, conduct meetings and serve as officers in various leadership roles. Leadership skills are developed by becoming an Officer of the Club or by learning how to control meetings by acting as Toastmaster of a meeting.

Power talk meets every second Monday of the month with meetings alternating between Lunchtime (12.30 pm) and Evening (5.15 pm). Meetings are usually held in the Head Office or ESBI.
