Portarlington Generating Station (1946-1988) A Pictorial History

A wonderful pictorial history of Portarlington Generating Station, which was located in the midlands, has been produced by ex-staff of the now demolished plant. The book depicts the history of the power station from the years 1946-1988 and a copy was presented to the Chief Executive, Padraig McManus (whose father had been Station Manager there) at a function in ESB Head Office on December 8th.

Those of you who passed through Portarlington on your career path in ESB or indeed worked there for your entire ESB career will find it both nostalgic and extremely interesting. As you turn the pages, you'll end up reliving the life of the station - a life that not only covered the working of the plant but the many social events, community occasions and personal achievements of the staff there.

Jon McCowen and Pat Culleton, both ex-staff of Portarlington and key drivers of the book, attended the function and praised the many colleagues and areas throughout ESB who provided valuable information and photographs. It was obviously a labour of love and this is very evident to those of us who were lucky enough to receive early copies.

The book will officially be launched at an event shortly in Portarlington but I suggest you try and get an early copy and take a trip down memory lane. Even if you haven't worked in Portarlington you'll enjoy the book and recognise many of the faces.
