Safety high on the agenda for ESBIe-fm overhead lines design staff

ESBI engineering and Facility Management (ESBIefm) Overhead Lines (OHL) Design staff from all over Ireland gathered recently in Kilkenny for a conference on safety. The event took place on Thursday, June 5th and was designed to raise awareness of the various ESBI Safety and Health programmes available through ESBI and in particular within High Voltage.

The goal of the conference was to ensure that all OHL out-of-office activities are carried out with heightened safety awareness, especially in the context of the new OHL Safe Work Methods.

The conference, organised by OHL Design and Engineering Manager Cathal Ó Luain, Jill Cregan and Elaine Hannan, was well attended. The session opened with a welcome address from Cathal, which was followed by a number of short morning presentations.

  • HV Manager, Eamonn Duggan spoke about the current ESBI safety targets and the current status in achieving these.
  • Liam Mannion and Gráinne Coogan presented on the latest Health, Wellbeing and Safety programme in ESBI, including the Safe Driving initiative.
  • Frank Shiel outlined the Project Supervisor Design Process (PSDP) and Designer duties and responsibilities;
  • Mike Fitzgerald presented on the topic of safety developments in Asset Management Services' OHL area.
  • Elaine Hannon gave an overview of OHL's Safe Work Methods.
The latter half of the day was managed by Dave Petty from PsychaLogica, a specialist UKbased consultancy who conducted Behavioural Safety workshops with the attendees. Attitudes affecting safety, as well as attitudes towards safety culture, were explained and discussed. Staff were then taken through some potential international accident scenarios.

The Safe Work Methods for all OHL out-of-office activities were also examined in some detail during the afternoons workshops. Associated procedures based on incident scenarios were, as a result, developed by the Technology Area Leaders (Jarlath Doyle, Peter Ennis, William Mongey/Shane McLoughney and Kevin Coffey/David Reidy). All of which provided an ideal vehicle for the core of the behavioural workshops.

Cathal Ó'Luain commented, "The day has been a great success and challenged everyone's thoughts on, and attitude towards, safety. Feedback from staff who attended the event has been very positive."
