Deirdre Newell treks through the Ring Deirdre newell of the ESBIe-fm Environment Group took to the mountains of South Kerry recently in aid of the Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust. The trek took place in glorious Kerry sunshine from Thursday, May 15th to Saturday, May 17th. The first day saw the group of 22, from all over Ireland, scale the heights of Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest mountain, under the expert guidance of Michael and Mark of MORActive. The descent from the peak via the Devil's Ladder was even tougher on the muscles than the climb and the facilities of the thermal suite in the local hotel in Caherciveen were fully used that night. On day two the group set out from just south of Waterville and trekked Eagles Hill and Coomcallee. With slightly tired legs, the group trekked through the Toomies and the Gap of Dunloe and finished at Kate Kearney's Cottage for a muchdeserved beverage. The climbing enthusiasts in the group were delighted to meet Pat Falvey, who by coincidence was in the pub that afternoon. Deirdre and Eileen O'Shea, also of the ESBI Environment Group, held a Race Night in April to raise funds for the trek. They both wish to sincerely thank all who supported the Race Night which raised a very impressive €5,000 for the Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust. |
