Appreciation Paddy Casey The recent death of Paddy Casey (ex Ballycoolin) was an occasion of great shock and sadness to his beloved family and to his ESB friends. He is survived by his wife Pat, son Paul, and his two grandchildren, Aine and Eoghan. Paddy's work was difficult and critical to ESB operations. He became Transport Supervisor in 1988 and he applied a 'noproblem' approach to all assignments, which was appreciated throughout the engineering functions in ESB. He knitted together a superb team of transport individuals. Together they handled heavy loads across inaccessible routes, often preceded by a difficult offload from a ship. Whatever could not be planned or anticipated was dealt with on route without fuss. There were many dimensions to Paddy's job and these also received his careful attention. Paddy was responsible for transferring the entire stock and equipment from Polefield and Lower Erne Street to Ballycoolin in 1993. This was a daunting task, but for Paddy it was just another enjoyable challenge. Paddy's respect for customers and colleagues and his unfailing good humour were his hallmark. In 1988, ESB extended Paddy's heavy transport function to external customers, earning ESB a well deserved industry reputation. When Paddy retired in 1998, he pitched in to help Paddy Byrne, his heavy duty mechanic and friend, with valuable restorations of a Scammell, and then a Foden, both 'heavies' legacies. He also ran an office of sorts in the 'Shamrock' near his Finglas home. This was where friends could come for a reflective chat about their troubles, or about the meaning of life. Words fail to capture the worth of this giant-hearted man. Safe travelling Paddy. |
