ESB Beach Lightning Race 2007

The 13th running of ESB Business Houses Athletic Association 5K beach race was held on June 19th in terrible weather conditions. The sky opened and we had a strong cross-wind, plus a few flashes of lightning for good measure! The going was anything but good as water lodged on the course.

Someone remarked during the race: "Is the tide coming in again?" Jerry Kiernan suggested that this will be like the GPO in 1916 – this is the race that will be remembered! Race organisers Charlie Cronin and Larry MacSweeney ensured that everything went smoothly in the circumstances and 220 competitors lined up on Sandymount strand.

Dave Byrne, KIT Ind Trading, retained his title by winning the race in 16.58, just two seconds slower than 2006. He was presented with the Eamonn Gilbert Trophy by Gertie Gilbert. In second place was Ronan Guirey, Tomkins & Co, in 17.08, Jerry Kiernan is coaching this athlete and has high hopes for him. Eanna Cunnane, Outstart, was third in 17.20.

Paul Cowhie, CMS, who finished fifth in 17.43 was first man over 40 and he retained the Stephen Kennefick Trophy in this category. The trophy commemorating Stephen's memory was presented by son David Kennefick. Orla Gormley, Aer Lingus, was first lady home in 35th place overall in 20.42. Sue Zinay, HSE, finished second in 21.09 while Helen Leonard (Carroll Education) was 3rd in 21.11.

In the Clanna Gael/Fontenoys GAA Clubhouse, John Power, Head of ESB Corporate Affairs presented all the prize-winners with their prizes. The results are available on the ESB Intranet Site under Sports & Social, Athletics Club. Refreshments were served to all competitors courtesy of Head Office Catering Services. Chris Quirke and his team ensured that everyone received hot refreshments after the race.

ESB Athletic Club would like to thank the following, ESB Corporate Affairs, Joe Mescall and Jonathan Kirwan in ESB Head Office Restaurant, Shay Connolly in Clanna Gael Fontenoy GAA Club and both the Gilbert and Kennefick families. Stewarding is vital for all races and this was provided by ESB work colleagues, friends and members of ESB AC. ESB Athletic Club would welcome new members for future BHAA events.
