Milestone for ESB Power Generation as trading begins in the Single Electricity Market

Trading in the Single Electricity Market (SEM) began on June 1st, with the establishment of Directed Contracts between ESB Power Generation and Suppliers across the island. These contracts represent the first actual trades ahead of the November deadline for the creation of this new market.

The SEM will harmonise the 'north-south' electricity markets and will create a single cross-border trading arena.

This will allow greater competition in the electricity generation sector, which should in turn bring downward pressure on electricity costs for customers across Ireland.

As trading began, Power Generation Executive Director Pat O'Doherty welcomed the commencement of operations that will facilitate the all-island market. "The exchange of contracts with independent power procurers is a landmark in the development of competition within the energy sector.

The Single Electricity Market is no longer just an aspiration but is quickly becoming a reality." Speaking at an event to mark the successful completion of the first trades, Mick Roche, the Power Generation Energy, Trading and Regulation Manager, thanked the teams involved in preparing for the SEM. "This is a very significant project for ET&R and our success today is as a result of hard work and commitment on all your parts. You deserve our congratulations and thanks," he concluded.

The All Island Electricity Market will come into effect on the 1st of November this year.
