Hello and Welcome
to the summer edition of EM. Most of us have got into the holiday mood at this stage and with exams over and schools closed a large number of families are heading off on holiday. As a result, we will have noticed the improvement in the mornings on traffic levels but this is balanced by the increase, more so in traditional scenic and tourist spots, of holiday traffic. Summer unfortunately always sees a large number of accidents taking place on our roads, and sadly an equally high number of fatalities. Likewise, over the past few weeks, we have seen a number of drowning fatalities.

Personally, I have noticed a number of drivers whose families have probably moved down the coast for the summer now commuting to Dublin to work each morning and I have to say I have seen an increase in driver aggression, failing to observe the speed limits that regular users have got used to on these routes. Drivers are speeding, flashing lights, undertaking and overtaking at dangerous sections of roadway where they do not have an adequate view of what's ahead. Appeals from the Gardai and Safety Authorities seem to be falling on deaf ears in a lot of cases and the unsafe driving I have observed is not by young boy racers, but by 30 to 50 year-old men and women. Let's not make this a holiday season of sadness and heartbreak for any family. Do our bit now to ensure that, we at least, do not do something to contribute to the horror that is visited on a family almost every day of the week currently by fatalities on our roads.

On a lighter note the wonderful weather at the start of June lifted everyone's spirits as summer clothing flew out of the shops and garden and DIY centres had a sudden boost in their sales. There was a definite feel-good factor about and now most people are looking forward to a break to recharge the batteries and chill out. EM too will be taking a break for August, but please continue to send in your contributions for the September issue. We hope you have a wonderful summer and return refreshed and rejuvenated.
