Top safety award presented to Aghada Power Station

Staff at aghada Generating Station recently celebrated the achievement of a new safety milestone in the history of the 25-year old Cork power station.

On Thursday 30th March 2006, the station reached 1000 days without a lost time accident and proudly rolled out the banner to proclaim their success. Congratulating staff, Station Manager Nicholas Tarrant said that this was a fantastic achievement for the station. "Our target is to have an injury-free environment and the ongoing contribution of everyone in the station is making this possible."

The local safety committee plays a strong leadership role in driving safety performance improvement at Aghada. An interesting initiative that they have undertaken this year is to improve their own effectiveness. A safety workshop held at the start of the year concentrated on ways to improve the effectiveness of the committee. New members have been drafted on board and a follow on half-day briefing session was held with all staff to focus on safety improvement initiatives and new Power Generation safety requirements. The committee has formed task groups for each safety improvement initiative and progress is monitored via action lists at monthly meetings.

By working more effectively as a safety committee, enabling better communication and greater staff involvement in safety improvement, Aghada hopes to continue to build on its excellent safety performance.
