ESB Customer Supply is making a real difference to low-income families and the older community A number of fuel poverty agencies received a major boost recently with a donation of CFL bulbs and lagging jackets from ESB Customer Supply. Over the last number of years ESB Customer Supply has worked with a number of fuel poverty support agencies around the country, to support the Sustainable Energy Ireland Warmer Homes Scheme. The scheme aims to improve the energy efficiency and comfort conditions of homes occupied by low-income households and the elderly. It also aims to establish systems and grow the capacity in Ireland to install such measures. The work carried out under this scheme includes attic insulation, draught proofing, lagging jackets, energy efficient lighting, cavity wall insulation and energy advice. Eligible homes, which can be privately-owned or rented, are identified locally via networks drawn from the statutory and voluntary sector. The scheme operates in counties all over Ireland including: Donegal, Galway, West Meath, Cavan, Dublin, Mayo, Leitrim, Kerry, Cork, Limerick and Clare. The installation of these products benefits the households where they are fitted by helping them to reduce their electricity bills. CFL bulbs use 80% less electricity and last up to 15 times as long as ordinary bulbs. As a result, replacing an ordinary bulb with a CFL can help a customer save up to €195 in electricity costs over the lifetime of that CFL bulb. Fitting a lagging jacket can save customers up to 30% of their water heating costs. The project was launched recently in Limerick and in Cork.
