Safety Conference 2009 The annual Power Generation Safety Conference, took place in Moran’s Silversprings Hotel Cork on Wed 29th and Thursday 30th April. This two day event was organised before Power Generation’s 2009 overhaul season and was used as an opportunity to refocus attention on health and safety in advance of a large increase in the work programme throughout all Power Generation locations. The first day of the conference was attended by the ‘Safety Advisors’ – Nominated Safety Engineers, Safety Services Officers, Staff Safety Representatives and Safety Services. A large variety of topics were discussed varying from ‘Tracking infrastructure delivery in Poolbeg’ presented by Kenneth Matthews to a discussion on the ‘Move to Sharepoint’ presented by Adrian Buckley. Other presenters on the day included Kevin Enright, Brian Cotter, Fionn Griffin and Arthur Stephens. Members of HSE Cork County Ambulance Service presented a very impressive display on emergency management, including a practical demonstration of their chemical incident response capability, which for many was the highlight of day one of the conference. The second day of the conference, which was focused at the front line and middle managers from Power Generation locations as well as Safety Advisors, was opened by Mick O’Mahony who gave an outline of safety initiatives within Power Generation. The packed programme also included presentations by Kevin Enright, Pat Gilbride, Ronan Collier and Derek Fuller who each presented on New Power Generation Safety Rules, Safe Driving Review, Health and Wellbeing and Contractor Management respectively. During the conference Pat O’Doherty, Executive Director Power Generation, launched the NOSTRA switching simulation package to be used within Power Generation as well as presenting prizes to the winning entrants in the Power Generation Excellence in Health and Safety awards 2008. The overall prize went to Lough Ree Power. Merit Awards were won by Marina, Lough Ree Power, Property and Asset Recovery, Fisheries and Aghada Unit 1 overhaul. Congratulations to all winners. An individual merit award was presented to Felim Keegan from Aghada for his contribution to safety within Power Generation. The afternoon session certainly provided food for thought when Angelo Mc’Nieve from Mumo Consultants presented a thought provoking session entitled ‘Safety – Cost or Currency’. In his closing remarks Pat O’Doherty said “We as a company have invested a lot of effort into maintaining the practical elements around safety management, but we now need to raise the bar to give greater consideration to the human elements underpinning safety management”. During the conference, delegates were given the opportunity to visit a number of displays on Health & Safety related topics ranging from OH&S to Equality and Safe Driving, as well as displays on PPE, Power Generation Safety Bulletins and rescue equipment. |
