DEN-Liberia - shelter and hope in Gbarnga, 2006 Liberia continues to recover slowly and painfully from years of instability and civil war. Former refugees returning to Gbarnga, Bong County, found scenes of utter desolation, with homes and infrastructure looted and destroyed. In particular, all the metal sheet roofing had been systematically removed by retreating militias for resale across the border. Sr. Miriam O'Brien, an Irish Sister of St. Louis, and DENLiberia, an indigenous development agency, set about facilitating recovery for the most vulnerable and destitute. A €10,000 grant from ElectricAid in December 2005 accomplished a simple and essential task - the repair and re-roofing of 30 family homes. The basic shelter needs of 150-200 people have been met, allowing them a measure of dignity and a reasonable base from which to rebuild their lives. These are not faceless, nameless beneficiaries. The report from DEN-Liberia listed the names and addresses of the householders you have helped in their hour of greatest need. ElectricAid has partnered DEN-Liberia and the Jesuit Refugee Service since 1998. As Liberia moves into a postconflict recovery phase, we expect, with your help, to continue to provide hope and to rebuild lives.
