SPORTSCO leads the way in activities for the Active Age

As part of SPORTSCO's challenge to go that extra mile in ESB Customer Service, they have developed a series of activities both social and active to deal with the growing number of adults with more time to spare than ever before.

"Future growth in population changes will shift the target market for the fitness industry. The strongest growth in numbers is set to be among the 55-64 age group, many of whom will be cash and time rich. Demand drivers include changin lifestyles and people being more health conscious than ever as they grow older. SPORTSCO aim to offer programs and facilities to meet the demands of the ever increasing number of people retiring from ESB" says Lorna Brady, General Manager.

Lorna also added that "not only do the programs offered enhance physical wellbeing but also offers a social outlet at a time when most people really need it."

We aim to offer all under one roof within a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. We also felt that if people could relate to a particular staff member it builds up a relationship to encourage the person to stick with their individual programme.

Anne-Marie Halpin is the Active Age co-ordinator for SPORTSCO and can be contacted at SPORTSCO 6687022 ext: 310 if you require any information on the advertised programs.

SPORTSCO believes that no one is too old to enjoy the benefits of regular physical activity. Regular exercise can improve the quality of life and the ability to live independently.

One such activity is 'Water Aerobics' which is available on Tuesday mornings 10-11a.m. and Monday evenings 7-8p.m. with Anne-Marie. It is a great way of working the cardiovascular and muscular systems because your body is virtually weightless and the impact on the joints is greatly reduced. This also means people with arthritic conditions or decreased range of motion can enjoy this exercise program.

Strength Training programs can benefit the older adult in a number of ways and increase strength, stamina and energy levels:

  • After 60 - 65 years muscle strength declines.
  • Statistics show 40% of people over 65 fall at least once a year.
  • Improvements in lower extremity strength can reduce the risk of injury.

Individual fitness programs, including strength training exercises can be tailored by SPORTSCO's highly qualified fitness staff. Please phone on 6687022 ext310. EM
