A LIFE in the week - Bernie Shiels
Job Title/Description: I am a
member of the Marketing
Communications, Channel and
Service Development team in ESB
Customer Supply. I work on the
community initiatives programme of
activity that aims to support and
enhance ESB Customer Supply's
position and reputation in local
community life. My role is mainly
supporting and working in
partnership with many voluntary
and charitable organisations.
What do I like most about
your job?
The interaction I have with
many different people and
organisations on a daily basis. My
work can be as varied as organising
and running shows and conferences
to working closely with
organisations such as St Vincent de
Paul, MABS and Age Action.
If I wasn't in my current job,
what would I be doing?
As I am
already a volunteer for the charity,
Age Action Ireland, I would love to
take a year out to develop this
interest.
Personal ambition?
To see my
two sons Colin and Eoin complete
their education and be happy and
fulfilled in whatever path they
follow in life.
If I had a choice of another
career what would it be?
Teaching, as it was
my first choice of career on leaving
school but the attraction of a good job in ESB won out in the end. It
never fails to amaze my children
that I have understanding of
Trigonometry and Statistics. It is a
constant cause of amusement to
them that 'even at my age' I am
still their first port of call for help.
Children are great aren't they?
What person has influenced you
most?
Definitely my mother
because even now at 83 years
young, she continues to teach me
humility and patience. With Mum
the cup is always half full and she
successfully passed on this positive
outlook on life to all her 10
children.
What is your favourite journey
and why
That 10 minute journey
to Dublin Airport, with the
anticipation of seven sun filled days
in Portugal or France, good food
and wine and total relaxation.
How do you chill out?
A leisurely
walk on Portmarnock beach, a
game of tennis, watching the
children play GAA in our local club,
Naomh Mearnog and my passion is
eating out and catching up with
friends.
Which four people, past or
present, would you invite to
dinner?
To keep all
member of the family engaged over
dinner it would have to be
Tiger Woods to hold my eldest sons
interest, Ronaldhino to amuse my
younger son, Robert Plant for my
music crazed husband and Michael
Parkinson just for me.
