Appreciation

Appreciation Pat McArt

Just before Christmas we were contacted by John McArt who wrote to us in relation to his 90-year old dad, Pat, an ESB veteran going back to the early days of rural electrification in Donegal. John told us that Pat had lived and breathed ESB all his life and never ceased to regale his family with the endless stories of the days on Rural!

Pat was seriously ill at that stage and still an avid reader of EM, keeping up with all the news of the company he loved so dearly. John gave us a lot of information on his dad’s working life and asked us if we could publish a little feature on his dad before his imminent death so that he could see it and enjoy it in his final days.

It was a wonderful story and we published it the next issue of EM which was January of this year. Pat did indeed get to read it and proudly showed it to all his family, friends and the neighbours who visited him, just a week before he sadly died. John had told him about it and he waited in anticipation for his copy to arrive.

Pat passed away in the company of his loving family on January 19th. His life in ESB had spanned 40 years and up to the day he died he never ceased to speak highly and lovingly of his time there.

His family would like to thank the old colleagues who contacted him and them following the publication of the article and the huge number who travelled in atrocious weather conditions to attend his funeral.

Pat is typical of so many people who had many wonderful years of work and friendship in ESB and who achieved so much in their own lives. The light of Heaven to Pat.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and to John who thought of giving him such a wonderful gift in his final days. May he rest in peace.
