Jerry Harrington Retires

Jerry harrington retired in early December from Power Generation's Safety Services where he had worked as a safety consultant from 1996. Prior to that, from 1972 onwards, Jerry worked as an Instrument Technologist in Allenwood Generating Station. For a short period in the early '70s he worked in Ferbane as an Instrument Technician, prior to that he was a fitter attached to Ardnacrusha. He started his ESB career in Marina joining as an apprentice in October 1963.

A function to mark Jerry's retirement was held on Friday January 23rd in Naas GAA Club where many colleagues gathered to mark the occasion.

Family, friends, Naas GAA club members, former Allenwood colleagues and staff from Safety Services enjoyed a great evening of camaraderie and celebration with most joining the fun and displaying their singing talents. One of the highlights for Jerry was meeting his friends from the 1963 to 1968 apprenticeship courses, who were together for the occasion 45 years after they trained together. Unfortunately, not all were able to make it and they were sorely missed when those present recalled incidents from more than four decades ago.

Many tributes were paid to Jerry who, at the end of the night, thanked all for attending and went on to show a video that was made by Jerry and two of his friends who are sadly no longer with us, Dick Cross and Leslie Steedman. The video, appropriately called Generating Electricity in Allenwood, shows the complete story of generating electricity in the station, from the turf cutting in the bog, the harvesting and the delivery, right through to the complete generating process in the station. Many of the attendees on the night had never seen the video before and it brought the evening to a pleasant and memorable end. We wish Jerry many years of good health and happiness in his retirement.
