Appreciation John Maher It was with great sadness and regret that the friends and colleagues of John Maher learned of his untimely death on 15th November 2005. John was ill for some time but had worked up to the end of July and still managed in his unique way to maintain his goodhumoured and smiling demeanour. John's career in the ESB spanned 33 years. He started his apprenticeship in 1964 in the Air Corp and left there in 1970. Following a brief spell in England, where he worked with Dan Air, he returned home to work in Bord na Mona for a short while before joining ESB Projects in Tarbert U3/4 construction. He moved to the station to a permanent position as Instrument Technician in 1977. John was a man of many fine qualities. He was meticulous in his work and attention to detail. He was promoted to Supervisor position in Instruments in 1987. He showed great leadership, people skills, was generous with his time and expertise, and was always ready to share his vast store of knowledge. Indeed, his staff looked up to him and during his illness became like an extended family to him. He was well-known throughout the station for his quick wit and loved to joke with people. In every situation he radiated an air of calm and his voice was never heard raised in anger. In his own life John was a private person. He had a deep love of family and was devoted to his wife Joan and children. A man who loved the simple things in life, he loved the outdoors. He had a passion for sailing and spent a lot of his spare time on the Shannon. This interest was shared by his wife and family. They had a deep involvement with Foynes Yacht Club and excelled in many competitions. He was a founder member of ESB Tarbert Boat Club and also a member of Tarbert Maritime club. He also loved all things military and had a huge interest in aviation. He had photos of all types of aircraft and could explain in detail the mechanical workings of them. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Joan, Martin, Jane and Maria on the loss of such a great man. Indeed the void he has left will never be filled. We truly miss his great presence, laughter and wit in the work place. You will always be remembered, our good friend John. Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam dílis. |
