Joe Moran R.I.P

Joe moran, our esteemed former colleague and Chief Executive, devoted a remarkable 47 years of his life to ESB. It was an extraordinary record- almost half a century of unrivalled dedication through some of the most dramatically changing times in ESB's history.

Joe will be remembered with affection and respect throughout ESB. His vision for the company was accompanied by his enormous skills as a patient communicator- attributes that helped him lay down a novel framework for crucial partnership arrangements in the company. In addition to strong financial management, his enduring legacy in ESB is the establishment of the CCR process for implementing change while maintaining industrial peace.

Joe believed in listening to others. His inherent respect for people and regard for what they had to tell him underpinned his philosophy for successful management. He placed enormous importance in talking to people throughout the company and he had their complete trust.

Outside ESB, Joe continued to dedicate his energy to many causes, giving on a voluntary basis. He and Cathleen enjoyed sharing their love of art. It is a source of regret to us all that he and his family did not get the opportunity to enjoy a long retirement after his many years of service to the company. The funeral Mass to celebrate his life heard a Reading from St. Paul:"I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith". The words were an eloquent and appropriate testimony to Joe's life.

To his wife Cathleen, daughter Ann and sons Richard, Connor and Lorcan, and to all his family we extend our ongoing sympathy.

Padraig McManus,
ESB Chief Executive
