Put your safety knowledge to the test and win a €50 voucher ESB strive to have zero incidents and therefore safety is a major focus for all staff. However, if an electrical accident does occur we have highlighted a few of the first aid steps that must be taken.
Electrical Burns
An electrical burn may be more serious than it appears. It can be quite deep even when the surface skin shows no evidence of burning. High current flow can cause entry and exit wounds where the current density is highest, but most of the damage is to the deep tissues which can be severely damaged by heat. Current flow through the heart (AC), may even cause cardiac arrest.

Management of Electrical Burns

  1. Check for danger of yourself or bystanders.
  2. Switch off the power if possible.
  3. Remove casualty from electrical supply without directly touching the casualty, using non conductive, dry materials.
  4. Wash and cool burnt area under running water.
  5. Apply a non-adherent/ burns dressing to the area once dried.
  6. If necessary dial 999.
