Swimming pool safety

Launch of key resource benchmarks safety standards for pools nationwide

The first edition of Irish Water Safety's 'Pool Safety Guidelines' which will contribute greatly to safety in all Irish swimming pools was launched by Minister Dick Roche on Monday 23rd April at Dublin City Council's Markievicz Leisure Centre, Townsend Street in Dublin.

IWS is alerting leisure centres and swimming pools nationwide to steps they can take to reduce the potential for injuries associated with pools. The most serious hazard is of course drowning. This new resource for water safety information and aquatic accident and drowning prevention guidelines will equip Swimming Pool Managers and Lifeguards to ensure there standards meet best international practices.

A safe pool environment means carefully following safety guidelines In addition to using caution and good sense, swimming pool centres must take all steps necessary to ensure public safety. IWS, in consultation with ILAM (The Industry Body for Sports, Fitness, Aquatic Facilities, Spas & Wellness) has produced these guidelines for the benefit of public and private swimming pools and leisure centres alike.

Although swimming pools (which should at all times be lifeguarded) offer a greater level of safety, the risk of accidents happening remains ever present. This risk is all the more prevalent with the recent upsurge in the number of leisure centres and pools opening in Ireland and the number of adults and children visiting these venues. The public have a duty of care for themselves and those within their charge when visiting these pools.

The publication will provide the leisure sector with guidelines and procedures that encompass rules of best practice drawn up by Irish Water Safety and will help swimming pools to plan for the unexpected incident where seconds can make a difference.

There are guidelines on structural considerations, risk assessments and lifeguarding that take into account the conditions particular to individual pools. There are considerations for the pool operators, the pool users and the pool employees with particular considerations regarding child protection.

Become a volunteer with Irish Water Safety and actively help to reduce drownings.
