Hello and Welcome
to the May edition of EM

The Power Challenge has once again been a major success with a record number of teams entering this year for what is our only international event in ESB. With two teams from Pakistan (Uch and Rousch stations), Amorebieta in the Basque region, Corby in the U.K., and of course our Irish teams from across the various business units, it was another wonderful occasion despite the weather.

With members of the organising committee, we joined the teams performing the late-night tasks at Torc Waterfall with heavy downpours in mucky conditions. I can only say I admire the team members who braved the elements and still returned for another day of tasks and torture (?) on Saturday. While Saturday proved better, there were still some showers, but it didn't dampen the spirits and over 250 people (including members of the Civil Defence and staff from Cappanalea Adventure Centre) enjoyed a fabulous night at the closing function in the Glen Eagle Hotel in Killarney. Our own Alan Murphy once again came up with the goods and put on a photographic slide display to some appropriate music which was, as always, very well-received. Alan has now become part and parcel of this annual event and, as the Corby-winning song states, can appear from anywhere on his bike to capture you at the most inappropriate moments!

The next test of fitness is the Sligo Walk and I am beginning to wonder if there's a side to this job that goes beyond the call of duty! However, we won't complain as both of these events give everyone a great opportunity to meet up with so many colleagues and also make new friends and acquaintances. We had a reminder of the distance we need to train for this month as we visit Sligo ahead of the walk to join our ESB Networks colleagues for the official opening of the new Headquarters in Sligo. We took the opportunity also to join some of the teams on new connections, as they play their part in the growing building boom, which seems to be taking part in every little village in the Yeats County. See you in Sligo.
