Hello and Welcome
to the October issue of EM.

Hello and welcome to the October edition of EM It's hard to believe that we are in the last quarter of 2007. If it wasn't for the leaves starting to turn yellow and the shortening days we might be deceived into thinking we haven't had our summer yet.

We regularly hear people ask 'Where has the year gone?' but time does appear to go faster as the years go by. Is that to do with age or is it more to do with the pace of life we lead? Is it because we are always rushing and planning for the next few months and suddenly that time is here?

Occasionally, I take a couple of hours, or even a day out when I just sit back and smell the roses so to speak. Maybe read a book, visit a nice garden or just go for a walk to listen to the birds and the wildlife. Have you ever stopped for five minutes and just remained silent and listen to what's going on around you? You might hear a plane high up in the sky, a passing vehicle, a bird singing or the sound of water in a nearby stream. Or it might be the chattering of people on a busy street as you sit outside a coffee shop. It's amazing what you will notice and it's a great way of looking at things differently.

It's also a good opportunity to chill out and you will be pleasantly surprised at the positive effect it can have on your whole outlook. The five minutes can become an hour and on another occasion a day. All of a sudden you will look forward to these times and realise its good for the soul.

Everyone needs a little time for themselves - a time to stand back and appreciate the wonderful things in our lives.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Bernie,
On June 20th, my electricity supply failed. I assumed there was a general fault in the area but this was not the case. Having replaced the main fuse to no avail, I phoned ESB at about 6.45pm.

The response was courteous and efficient. I was advised that ESB Networks Services would call that evening. When reporting the fault, I did not mention I was a former member of ESB staff.

By 7.20pm Sean Meyler of ESB Networks in Wexford arrived. The problem was not routine as there was a fault in the underground cable link to my house. Sean called for backup and by 8.15pm was joined by colleagues Ollie Byrne and Aidan Stewart.

The three got to work straight away, pulling the faulty cable - a small section of which was flattened - and feeding through a new line. Supply was restored by 9 pm.

It was most impressive to experience this highly efficient and speedy response from ESB front line staff who were clearly dedicated to providing a first class customer service. They were both professional and friendly throughout and were keen to ensure that I had my supply before dark.

It is heartening to see that the tradition of quality service still rates highly in ESB. My sincere thanks to all concerned.

Peter Sweetman, Wexford
