From A to Zinc! Details of ESBI’s work in the expansion of one of Europe’s largest zinc mines were given by Paul Doyle, an Engineering consultant within ESBIe-fm High Voltage Power System Studies, at a recent lunch & learn event. The Tara Mines plant near Navan in Co. Meath is currently undergoing a large expansion and electrical refurbishment, involving: replacement of a high voltage substation; decommissioning of two 2MW synchronous motors; installation of two new 4MW asynchronous motors and two power factor correction capacitor banks on the main MV busbar. ESBI were tasked with carrying out the system studies required to ensure the correct specification of all new equipment and also to ensure all grid code requirements were met post-expansion. The work carried out by the Power System Studies team included short circuit study, earthing study, power factor correction analysis, harmonic analysis and protection coordination, etc. |
