Second Sustainability Conference hosted at a carbon neutral Croke Park

Croke park provided the perfect venue for ESB’s second Sustainability Champions conference - as one of the first net carbon neutral stadiums in Europe, Croke Park was the obvious location! One hundred and thirty Sustainability Champions from across the company and the country travelled to the Dublin venue, delegates made use of more sustainable transport initiatives such as electric vehicles, public transport and bicycles to lead by example.

The conference featured presentations from a wide range of speakers on topics ranging from 'Sustainability in the Workplace' to 'Greener Homes'. ESB Chief Executive, Padraig McManus, addressed delegates by video link, demonstrating the effectiveness of the new technology on a number of levels, saving energy, saving time and reducing carbon generation incurred by travel to a venue.

Maurice O’Connor, Sustainable ICT, shared his presentation with Jim Murphy via weblink, again providing the usefulness of new technology in reducing Carbon and helping us all work in a more sustainable fashion.

Ger Noonan, Moneypoint told delegates about the local initiative undertaken at the station to encourage local schools to play their part. The initiative provided the basis for the schools entry to the ESBIE sponsored Green Schools Competition. The conference was opened by John Campion, Executive Director Sustainability, who told delegates that ESB has already met in excess of 20% of its five year carbon reduction target.

The guest speaker was Duncan Stewart, environmentalist and presenter of the Our House television programme. ESB is sponsoring the current series which will go out on the airwaves shortly. Duncan praised ESB for its leadership role among Irish business in meeting the global challenge of Climate Change.

The conference featured exhibition stands from the various sustainability initiatives across the ESB group including, Energy Services, ESB Networks sustainable premises, ESB Cycling Club, Smart Metering and Cúl Green and the Green Loan Scheme from St. Patrick's Credit Union.
