ESBI supports 40th UPEC at UCC

The 40th University Power Engineering Conference, held this year at University College Cork, is one of the major international conferences in the power industry. A total of 252 papers of high academic standard from 28 countries were presented at this year's Conference. Eight papers were presented by ESB authors, seven from ESBI and one from Power Generation. These were:

  • Implications of neutral treatment for ESB distribution networks during earth fault conditions Michael Spillane, ESBI
  • Construction of 220KV overhead lines in Ireland Jarlath Doyle, ESBI
  • Desulphurisation of flue gas in a large peat-fired CFB boiler Dara Connolly and Tom Canning, ESB Power Generation
  • The wind farm grid code provisions and the implications for future wind generation in Ireland Denis Spillane, ESBI
  • Impact of distributed generation on distribution network protection Thomas Gallery, Laura Martinez & Danijela Klopotan, ESBI
  • Compact air insulated switchgear a case study John E. Whelan and Alan Darbey, ESBI
  • Distributed generation - friend or enemy of voltage control? Ray O'Gorman, ESBI with M. Redfern of the University of Bath
  • The effect of earthing of cable sheaths on fault current distribution Neil McDonagh, ESBI
ESBI was one of the principal sponsors of the conference and the UPEC 2005 committee expressed their gratitude for the generous support of ESBI "who through their continued support, actively promote advanced research and development in Power Electronics and Electrical Systems". The conference was formally opened by Don Moore, MD of ESBI. Special credit is also due to Marta val Escudero of ESBI who helped with the organisation and chaired one of the technical sessions. Technical sessions were also chaired by Tom Gallery and Neil McDonagh.

A particularly interesting Plenary talk was given by Dr. Charles Elachi, Director of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who gave an extremely informative and entertaining account of NASA's missions to MARS. Dr Elachi dealt candidly with the many technical setbacks which the project encountered but remained philosophical: "As human beings it is not success that defines us, anybody can deal with success. But it is how we deal with and overcome failures that defines who we are."

One of the features of UPEC is the presentation of awards for individual papers and ESB authors have been well represented in this regard down through the years. This year, the best overall paper award was won by the Power Generation paper by Dara Connolly and Tom Canning.

Anybody interested in a copy of any of these papers should contact the author(s) directly.
