People of the Year Awards

Tommy Tiernan, Munster Rugby Stars and James Nesbitt Scoop People of the Year Awards while Navan Bus Crash Survivor is Young Irish Person of the Year.

Tommy tiernan was named Ireland's Funniest Living Person, whilst the Irish Person of the Year Award was jointly awarded to the Munster rugby squad at the 32nd annual People of the Year Awards held in Dublin on Saturday September 9th.

Fourteen-year-old Anita McCluskey, whose sister Claire was killed in the bus crash that claimed the lives of five Co. Meath schoolgirls last year, and who herself was a passenger on the illfated vehicle, received the Young Irish Person of the Year Award at the event, which is sponsored by ESB and organised by Rehab.

And star actor James Nesbitt received an award for his efforts to help Northern Ireland's cashstrapped WAVE charity, which provides support to people bereaved as a result of the Troubles continue its vital work.

International Person of the Year
Kerry mother Mags Riordan became the International Person of the Year for her life-saving work in Malawi, where her son Billy died in a drowning accident, whilst Galway GAA star Alan Kerins was honoured for easing the plight of the people in the AIDS-ravaged region of Zambia.

Nigerian-born Chinedu Onyejelem also received an award for his role in promoting cross-cultural understanding in Ireland. The presentations took place in Dublin's City West Hotel and the host for the event, which was broadcast live on RTÉ 1, was Gay Byrne.
