Con Sheahan Retires from ESBI Con sheahan, Manager, Civil & Structural Engineering, retired recently from ESBI Engineering & Facility Management (ESBI e-fm), after more than 35 years' service in both ESB and ESBI. Con has been involved in most of the major power projects in ESB over the last three decades from Turlough Hill, North Wall, Shannonbridge and Lanesborough Extensions and Moneypoint, through to the civil engineering aspects of more recent projects, such as Coolkeeragh (NI), Amorebieta (Spain), West Offaly and Lough Ree Power. Con has also contributed significantly on civil engineering aspects of many overseas consultancy projects - too numerous to mention here - and has managed and led a division which has made an enormous contribution to engineering both in ESBI and ESB. In recent retirement speeches by other ESBI retirees, there have been numerous references to Con but perhaps the most significant was one which emphatically stated that "in any project you could always have absolute confidence knowing Con was on your team." Over his career many people had the pleasure of working with Con and consequently he is widely known and held in great esteem both inside and outside ESBI. A man of compassion with a neverending wisdom and guidance, he always gave the correct steer to the humble enquirer, such that they left feeling more confident and believing they had solved the puzzle themselves. While it was Con's wish to retire quietly and without any fuss, his fellow engineering managers in Engineering Design, Systems & Resources (EDSR), the main engineering arm of ESBI e-fm, felt that the occasion could not pass without some event to formally mark this memorable milestone in ESB/ESBI history. As most people know, golf has played a big part in Con's life, and in addition to the Grange Golf Club, the ESBI Four Seasons Golf Society has been the welcome recipient of his involvement; his good shots, his bad shots (very few!), his camaraderie and his sense of community and humour. As a tribute to Con, the management team in EDSR recently held their regular monthly meeting at the Heritage Golf & Country Club in Co. Laois followed by a round of golf on this magnificent course. At the presentation over dinner that evening, Seamus McLaughlin, Manager, EDSR, made a surprise presentation to Con of a beautiful piece of 2000-year-old bog oak. The sculpture, specifically commissioned, is titled Shooting for the Stars and is intended to reflect the stature in which he will always be held by his colleagues and friends, and to point the way for the next stage of his life, wherever this may take him. We wish Con a long, happy and welldeserved retirement. |
